I met an old man tonight
He was quiet and shook softly
He couldn't get the dryer to work
So I gave him a hand
We sat together as our clothes dried
side by side
We chatted awhile
Of life and mothers and where the beauty has gone
Then he told me something that chilled me to the bone
As a child
This old man
was a Hitler Youth
And he still very much believed
I didn't have the guts to tell him
I was Jewish
I kept having flashes of that fateful day last summer
When upon a lonely grayhound
a boys life was ended for just sitting in the wrong seat
I want to cry but I can't
I wish the world wasn't the way it is
